Stop Smoking: Cancer Karma for Smokers – Smokers Inhale Their Own Second Hand Smoke

Stop Smoking: Good news for those who despise second hand smoke - Cancer Karma for Smokers. Chain-Smokers are exposed to the cancer-trigger equivalents of smoking 2.6 extra cigarettes a day – according to new research findings.
Italian government scientists conducted a study on newspaper vendors, who tend to work in isolation.
“Newsagents were chosen because they work alone in small news stands, meaning that any tobacco smoke in the air they breathe is strictly correlated to the number of cigarettes smoked by that newsagent,” said researcher Maria Teresa Piccardo from the National Cancer Research Institute in Genoa.
“We studied the contribution of environmental tobacco smoke made to carcinogen exposure in 15 active smokers.
“For someone smoking 14 cigarettes a day, re-inhaling exhaled “second-hand” smoke resulted in an exposure to cancer-triggers equivalent to smoking an extra 2.6 cigarettes.
“Both active and passive smoking contributions should always be considered in studies about the health of active smokers,” said Ms Piccardo.
The research is published online in the journal Environmental Health.

Secondhand Smoke Exposure is Traumatic – Rape of Your Spirit & Home
January 24, 2010 by Dr. Joyce Starr

The vicarious effects of trauma from secondhand smoke can be insidious, says psychologist Ann Hilty.
As Secondhand Smoke Crimes makes clear, not only are secondhand smoke victims in condos, apartments and multi-family buildings victimized by continued exposure to the smoke – but they are twice victimized by ignorant, abusive board members, property managers and owners who demean their suffering.
Secondhand smoke exposure is rape of your home. The pain from losing the security and peaceful enjoyment of property is acute. Your home becomes a prison, and there is no escape but to move (and few can afford to do so). In Utah, a family that wanted to escape was told they would have to pay $2,000 to cancel their lease. The smoker wins. Your life is turned upside down and no one cares.
“Many people are familiar with psychologist Abraham Maslow’s “Hierarchy of Need”, which indicates in what order our most basic needs must be met; a sense of safety and security is at the very foundation, just above physiological needs such as food, water, and breathing. Trauma of either type, or — most challenging of all — in combination and cumulative, represents the destruction of one’s sense of safety and security, and without this foundation, all other aspects of life become secondary. It is hugely difficult to experience a sense of joy, or of loving and being loved, or of trust and developing attachments, when one’s sense of safety is absent.” ~ Ann Hilty
Secondhand Smoke Abuse Against Children with Asthma – Sleep Breathing Disorders

Asthmatic Children: Sleep breathing disorders caused by second-hand smoke.
According to research published online in the January 18 edition of Pediatrics, children with asthma exposed to secondhand smoke (SHS) suffer greater and more dangerous sleep problems than those who are not exposed to second hand smoke.
Led by Dr. Kimberly Yolton of the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, the study analyzed data from 219 children, aged 6 to 12 years, with physician-diagnosed asthma that had been recently treated. The children in the study were exposed to at least five cigarettes a day at home. and their cotinine levels were assessed. Greater secondhand smoke exposure was associated with longer delays to sleep onset, more frequent parasomnias and sleep-disordered breathing, more daytime sleepiness, and more overall sleep disturbance.
The authors conclude: “The consequences of inadequate sleep in children are not trivial. Sleep disturbances have been linked with increased behavior problems, mental health problems, and poor school performance in children. In addition, effects of poor sleep in childhood can persist into adulthood in the form of obesity and behavior and mood disorders. Reduction in SHS exposure is an area with the potential for significant impact for physical and emotional health and school performance in the pediatric population.”
